Recycling factory raided for second time, in defiance of shutdown order

By Zareef Muzammil

SHAH ALAM, Feb 16 — A recalcitrant recycling factory, unheeding an earlier order from the Kuala Selangor Municipal Council (MPKS) to cease its operations, was raided a second time.

Situated along Jalan Abdul Aziz in Ijok, the premise in question was discovered to have increased the processing of scheduled waste like dry batteries, copper, and plastic circuit boards.

“The factory was ordered to shut down immediately and was issued compounds for disobeying the previous closure notice.

“Two electric power generator units and one forklift unit (stacker lift truck) were also seized during the raid,” said the council in a Facebook post.

The case will be investigated under the Trade, Business and Industrial Licensing Bylaws (Kuala Selangor District Council) 2007.

MPKS said two compounds were issued to the factory owner for leaving the building or land in unhygienic conditions, in addition to draining solid sewage into a nearby ditch.

Pursuant to this, Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd also aided in the process of disconnecting the water supply at the premise.

“Factory owners are advised to move to heavy industry areas, as e-waste recycling activities fall under that category.

“The Environment Department is currently in the process of preparing investigation papers for legal action, in accordance with the Environmental Quality Act 1974,” it said.

The first raid took place on January 19 as the factory, located in a village area, was raided by MPKS following complaints of odour pollution around Ijok.
