Number of flood evacuees in Johor drops further to 35,230

JOHOR BAHRU, March 15 — The number of evacuees in Johor has continued to drop, with 35,230 reported at 4pm compared to 36,086 at 8am today, following the closure of a flood relief centre (PPS) in Batu Pahat district.

The Johor Flood Disaster Management Committee (JPBN), in a statement, said the PPS at Dewan Parit Jayus Darat was shut down today, leaving 114 PPS still in operation in four districts.

“Batu Pahat is the worst affected with 35,062 victims from 9,867 families; followed by Segamat with 102 victims (29 families); Muar, 42 evacuees (14 families); and Tangkak, 24 evacuees (three families),” it said.

Meanwhile, Bernama’s checks in Batu Pahat today showed that residents were not allowed to return home yet as there was not much change in the floodwater level and the problem of stagnant floodwaters.

In fact, the majority of the victims could not yet start cleaning their houses, including in Kampung Parit Jayus Darat and Kampung Haji Khalid which were still under knee-deep waters this morning.

Bright weather has been forecast for nine districts this afternoon except for Batu Pahat which is expected to be overcast.

The Batu Pahat Public Works Department, in a Facebook post today, said four roads in Batu Pahat district are still closed to light vehicles as they remain flooded up to 0.43 metre.

The affected roads are Jalan Parit Haji Arif/Sri Dayung near Jambatan Sri Dayung, Jalan Parit Jambi near Jambatan Parit Jambi, and the whole of Jalan Parit Warijo and Parit Haji Arif near the Sri Medan Health Clinic.
