SHAH ALAM, March 17 — The Selangor government spends RM4.273 million to finance tuition costs of 189 higher education institutions (IPT) students in a five-year period since 2018.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the allocation under the Selangor State Scholarship Fund involved part of 11 education funding programmes.

“Overall, we have given donations to 103 IPT students in 2018, 2019 (18), 2020 (18), 2021 (9) and 2022 (41).

“Some years the relatively small (number of scholarship recipients) was due to Covid-19 pandemic and the opening of the university was somewhat disrupted,” he said in answer to Sentosa state assemblyman Dr G Gunaraj in the Selangor State Legislative Assembly session today.

Amirudin said the state government also donated RM1 million Selangor Bitara Scholarship (Bitara) to a student at Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2021.

“We also financed a student through the Middle East Scholarship. The cost of learning is fully covered until this student excels, with the condition that they must work in Selangor or serve in the state government subsidiaries,” he said.
