SHAH ALAM, March 3 — The Selangor State Executive Council has decided to approve the Misi Bantuan Kita Selangor Penyayang flood assistance mission to Johor, in light of the recent heavy rains and floods that have affected the state.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the first mission will begin tomorrow, with the dispatch of basic necessities like food and cleaning kits to Muar Storage Depot.

“Let us pray for the people of Johor to be preserved, and given the strength and courage to face this test,” he said in a Facebook post.

As of 4pm today, the number of flood victims in Johor stands at 32,870, a slight drop from 33,149 at 8am.

Its State Disaster Management Committee said two additional flood relief centres (PPS) were opened to assist the victims, bringing the total number of PPS to 219 in all 10 districts.

Segamat has been the most-affected of all of Johor’s districts with 12,258 people from 3,511 families evacuated to 78 centres. This is followed by Kluang with 5251 victims from 1,528 families in 39 centres, and Batu Pahat with 4,491 victims from 1,215 families in 25 centres.

Meanwhile, Bernama reported Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Campus Sustainability (UTMCS) director Assoc Prof Mohd Fadhil Md Din as saying that Johor is expected to experience unusually heavy rainfall.

This is due to the transition from the monsoon season to hot weather, which will last until the end of March and is also expected to particularly affect the state’s eastern and southern areas.
