Selangor poll: Sultan consents to June 23 state assembly dissolution

KLANG, June 19 — The Selangor state assembly is set to be dissolved this Friday to pave the way for the upcoming state election.

This is after Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj consented to the dissolution following an audience with Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

His Royal Highness said the dissolution declaration ceremony was held earlier taking into account that he and the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin would be leaving the country tomorrow to perform their haj.

They are expected to return home on July 4.

“After deliberation and receiving the request for dissolution from the menteri besar, I consent to signing the declaration of dissolution of the 14th state legislative assembly today, which will take effect this Friday.

“This is to allow for the state election to be held,” he added.

Earlier, Amirudin had sought an audience with High Royal Highness to seek for the state assembly to be dissolved.

Also present during the ceremony were the Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah, state Speaker Ng Suee Lim, secretary of the state Dato’ Haris Kasim and state government leadership.

On June 14, Kelantan announced that its state assembly is scheduled to dissolve on June 22, six days before it is automatically dissolved on June 28, followed by Selangor, two days before the end of its five-year term on June 25, and Kedah as well as Penang on June 28.

Negeri Sembilan stated that its state assembly will dissolve sometime at the end of the month, while Terengganu has yet to decide on the date of dissolution.

Terengganu is set to automatically dissolve on July 1, followed by Negeri Sembilan on July 2, Kedah on July 4 and Penang on August 2.

Polling day must be held within 60 days from the dissolution of the state assembly. All six states are anticipated to dissolve their assemblies around the same time for the elections to be held simultaneously.

Selangor has 56 state seats. Following the Sheraton Move in 2020, Pakatan Harapan (Harapan) has 40 seats, followed by Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional with five seats each, Parti Bangsa Malaysia and Parti Pejuang Tanah Air with two seats each and one seat under Warisan.

One seat was declared vacant in February after former Batang Kali assemblyman, Harumaini Omar of Pejuang, failed to attend the state assembly sitting for more than six months.
