By Sofia Nasir

SHAH ALAM, July 11 — Being a state with a development action plan that encompases all fields and sectors has solidified Selangor’s position as the country’s main economic gateway, according to its executive councillor for investment Dato’ Teng Chang Khim.

He said the plan, which comprises various initiatives, programmes and key performance indicators (KPIs), has helped drive state development.

“This has aided us in being more focused (in our jobs), as everyone knows of their respective directions,” he told SelangorKini.

Teng said the state’s 25.5 per cent contribution to the national gross domestic product (GDP), its highest on record, proves that the action plan has produced the desired results.

He also expressed satisfaction that Selangor has been able to achieve its target of contributing at least a quarter of the country’s economy.

“Previously, I can only say that Selangor contributed close to a fourth of the national GDP, but now I can boast about surpassing the figure,” he said.

Last month, the Statistics Department reported that Selangor remains as the main contributor to Malaysia’s GDP in 2022 with 25.5 per cent, an increase of 0.7 per cent from the previous year.

Meanwhile, Teng, who previously announced his retirement from active politics, said he plans to venture into other fields upon the full conclusion of his current duties with the state.

The Bandar Baru Klang incumbent state assemblyman said he intends to be either start a business, be a writer or get involved in arts and cultural programmes.

“I have not decided yet. My interests are quite broad. I like businesses, arts and culture. Sometimes, I want to be a writer, sometimes a host. I’m not even sure myself yet.”

The 60-year-old politician is among the longest serving state representatives in Selangor, having been first elected into the legislative assembly in 1995.

He has held numerous key positions in the state administration throughout his career.
