National divers falter at World Aquatic Championships

KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 — The national diving squad continues to be hampered by disappointment at the 2023 World Aquatic Championships in Fukuoka, Japan today, when the pair of Jellson Jabillin – Nur Eilisha Rania Muhammad Abrar Raj failed to get on the podium in the Mixed 10m Synchronised event.

According to the championship’s website, Jellson – Nur Eilisha Rania collected 251.64 points to finish 12th out of 14 contenders in the final at the Fukuoka Prefectural Pool.

Wang Feilong – Zhang Jiaqi of China were clearly in a class of their own to claim the gold medal with 339.54 points, followed by Jose Balleza Isaias – Viviana Del Angel Peniche from Mexico who won silver (313.44 points), while Japanese pair Hiroki Ito – Minami Itahashi came in third (305.34 points).

It was also disappointing when Ooi Tze Liang – Muhammad Syafiq Puteh only finished in 19th place out of 27 pairs in the qualifying round, after collecting 326.73 points in the Men’s 3m Synchronised event.

Chinese divers Wang Zongyuan – Long Daoyi topped the qualification round with 451.44 points, followed by Tocci Giovanni – Marsaglia Lorenzo from Italy with 384.69 points, while Jack Laugher – Anthony Harding of Great Britain were third (383.46 points).

The result saw Ooi – Muhammad Syafiq not qualify for the final after failing to place themselves in the top 12. The final will take place this evening.

The 2023 World Aquatic Championships started yesterday and ends on July 30.
