SHAH ALAM, Aug 17 — Pakatan Harapan’s (Harapan) Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan has called for an end to all forms of attempts to sow disunity and destabilise the country’s political landscape, now that the state elections are over.

Among other things, the DAP lawmaker said politicians and supporters should cease from making any more provocative or slanderous statements that are meant to divide the public.

This includes the issuance of imprudent statements pertaining to the alleged closure of private religious schools in Selangor.

“The authorities ought to play a role in enforcing the law to ensure any attempts to disrupt public order are curbed and prevented,” he said in a statement today.

Syahredzan’s statement is in reference to recent claims by political opponents that over 200 Islamic religious schools in the state are being evicted from their respective premises.

Several quarters, including caretaker Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari and Religious Affairs Minister Datuk Mohd Na’im Mokhtar, have since denied the allegations, calling them baseless and mere attempts at causing anxiety among the Muslim community.

Syahredzan said by right, the conclusion of the August 12 elections in six states should put a full stop to any attempts to destabilise the country, and reminded elected representatives to accept the people’s mandate.

“Whether you are in the government or opposition bloc, you must accept the legitimacy of the Unity Government at the federal level, as well as all the state administrations.

“Political stability is vital for this nation, which is still recovering from years of political instability and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“If politicians continue to give the impression of continuous political turmoil, how is it possible to restore confidence?” he questioned.

Shahredzan said the public has now grown tired of seeing statements issued by political leaders about seizing power.

In this regard, he urged everyone to allow the prime minister, Cabinet and the whole Unity Government leadership lineup to carry out their responsibilities without any disruption.

“Let us rebuild this nation together through a visionary and concerned government and a responsible opposition that will play the check and balance role.

“The rakyat has chosen, it is now time to work,” he said.
