Asean foreign ministers express condolences, offer earthquake relief assistance to Morocco

JAKARTA, Sept 13 — Foreign ministers from Asean countries have expressed their sadness over the tragic loss of lives and extensive property damage caused by the earthquake in Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains on Friday (September 8).

“Asean expresses its heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the government and people of the Kingdom of Morocco, especially the families of the earthquake victims,” the ministers noted in a joint statement today.

They also affirmed their solidarity with the Moroccan government and people during these challenging times and stand ready to provide assistance for relief efforts.

“Asean is confident the Kingdom of Morocco will overcome and recover swiftly from the impact of this natural disaster,” said the ministers

The deadly earthquake struck central Morocco late on Friday night, with the latest media reports stating that it has claimed over 2,800 lives, injured many more and caused widespread devastation.

The powerful quake, with a magnitude of 6.8 struck shortly after 10 pm local time at a depth of 18.5 kilometres (km), with the epicenter located in the High Atlas Mountains about 71 km southwest of the historic city of Marrakech.
