Malaysia-India technical cooperation benefits citizens of both sides — Deputy minister

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 — The Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) and the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme (ITEC) have benefited the citizens of both countries apart from strengthening bilateral ties, said Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Datuk Mohamad Alamin.

The collaboration between MTCP and ITEC has facilitated continuous skill development and competency enhancement among their citizens to meet the demands of the modern world.

“India’s ITEC and MTCP allow the two countries to benefit from our complementarities and comparative advantages. It is essential to continuously harness our skills and competencies to meet the demands of today’s world,” he said.

Mohamad was speaking at the officiation of the ITEC Day event organised by the Indian High Commission yesterday night, which was attended by the Indian High Commissioner to Malaysia B.N. Reddy, and several senior Malaysian government officials.

The deputy minister added that over 20 Malaysians have received training in India in the space sector, including remote sensing, and stressed the need for partnerships between both countries in areas like renewable energy, sustainable development, and digital transformation.

According to the official website of the Indian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, the ITEC programme offers training in various fields for Malaysian candidates, including banking, Information Communication and Technology (ICT), audit and accounts, hydrology, and management.

The programme initiated in 1964 involves 47 accredited institutions in India, offering training courses to 161 partner countries including Malaysia.

Trainees under the ITEC programme receive airfare, tuition fees, accommodation, and a living allowance from the Government of India. The administration of the ITEC programme falls under the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.
