Queen expresses wish for art, craft as in future

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 5 — Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah today expressed the hope for Malaysian art and craft to continue as a legacy in the future.

Her Majesty said if society does not take any action to preserve the national art and craft, it would likely become extinct over time.

“We should be proud of what we have. We have from Peninsular Malaysia to Sabah and Sarawak, with so many different kinds of art and craft (from a variety of cultures),” said the Queen said at the launching ceremony of CIMB Artober today.

Therefore, Tunku Azizah thanked the government, especially the Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation (Kraftangan Malaysia), for all its support to the industry through the years.

“Without the support of Kraftangan Malaysia, we would not be where we are today. Kraftangan Malaysia is (like) the teachers of every different type of craft (in the country. This has enabled us to preserve what we have around Malaysia,” said Her Majesty.

Earlier, the Queen graced the launching ceremony of CIMB Artober at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition (Mitec).

Her Majesty visited the exhibition for almost an hour before witnessing the CIMB Artober fashion shows by Pink Jambu, Daliey Fazdly, and Radzuan Radziwill.

CIMB Artober, an annual three-month art, culture and lifestyle initiative, returns for the fourth consecutive year to support the local contemporary creative arts scene.

The CIMB Artober showcases a series of lifestyle events, serving as a strategic platform to elevate art practitioners’ presence and position Malaysia as a thriving centre for creativity.

The three-day fair begins tomorrow until October 8, from 11am to 10pm, bringing together artists, designers, galleries, customers and the public through an immersive art festival.

The initiative is showcased over two platforms: CIMB Artober Art and Soul and CIMB Artober Fashion Week.
