KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 21 — Selangor’s commitment to sustainability is not merely empty talk, executive councillor Jamaliah Jamaluddin said today, pointing out how the state has taken bold steps to reduce carbon emissions and enhance the environment.

Jamaliah, who is in charge of public health, environment, climate change and green technology, noted that the state government is currently investing in renewable energy, sustainable transportation and green infrastructure in a bid to push Selangor to be leader in the race towards net zero.

She said the unwavering commitment to sustainability serves as a source of pride and guiding principle for the state’s future, aligning with Selangor’s long-term goals of fostering a harmonious coexistence between urban development and environmental preservation.

“Our dedication to sustainability not only ensures the well-being of its current residents but also lays a strong foundation for the generations to come, setting an inspiring example for regions worldwide to prioritise a greener and more sustainable future.

“I stand before you with a profound sense of optimism. I say with confidence that Selangor, under the visionary leadership of our state government, is poised for greatness,” she said in her welcoming speech at the AI, Net Zero and Biotech Investor Summit, in conjunction with the 8th Selangor Smart City and Digital Economy Convention (SDEC) 2023, here.

“Together with stakeholders across the board, we will continue to work tirelessly to integrate cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices into the fabric of our society.”

Earlier in her speech, Jamaliah said Selangor is committed to harnessing the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the people’s lives, by creating smarter, more efficient and sustainable cities.

Her remark is in line with Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari’s own statement yesterday that Selangor will be transformed into a “completely smart state” by the end of this term, with a system that ensures government services embrace digital solutions.

Jamaliah cited Entomal and FatHopes Energy — alumni of Selangor Information Technology and Digital Economy Corporation’s (Sidec) Selangor Accelerator Programme — as evidence of the state’s dedication to net zero business models.

“Entomal specialises in sustainable bio-waste treatment using the black soldier fly, while FatHopes Energy focuses on sustainable solutions for advanced biofuel production through the processing of fat, oil, and grease.

“These pioneering initiatives underscore the innovative potential within Sidec’s startups to contribute significantly to sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.

“These examples demonstrate that achieving net zero is possible in Malaysia through a combination of innovative technologies and sustainable design. Malaysian smart cities can learn from these examples and implement similar projects to reduce their carbon footprint and promote sustainable development.”

Separately, Jamaliah said Selangor also aims to take the lead in biotechnology, which holds the promise of revolutionising healthcare, agriculture, and environmental conservation.

“We are fostering innovation in biotech to address pressing issues like health care access, food security, and biodiversity preservation,” she said.
