State insurance compensation for families of children in fatal accidents

By Zareef Muzammil

SHAH ALAM, Oct 20 — The family of an 11-year-old SK Taman Bukit Indah student, who tragically passed away in an accident on Saturday (October 14), will be contacted no later than Monday (October 23) for the government’s insurance claim process.

The Selangor General Insurance Scheme’s (Insan) project manager Nur Syuhaida Jamalluddin said they received a report on the accident yesterday, involving Puteri Raisa Zahra Azlan as she was en route to school, from Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) or MBI, which requested the process be expedited.

Selangor General Insurance Scheme’s (Insan) project manager Nur Syuhaida Jamalluddin.

“MBI has given us a one-week deadline to contact the deceased’s family and assist in the insurance claim process. We will allow the family time to grieve as the incident is still fresh.

“Following this, we will contact the victim’s parents to confirm their address and postal code. Once the information is verified, we will guide them on how to make the claim,” she said when contacted yesterday.

Nur Syuhaida added that the victim falls under Insan’s blanket coverage category, based on her records, which provides comprehensive student protection with a total compensation of RM11,000.

“This comprehensive coverage includes infants aged 30 days to six years and school students aged seven to 19. We believe the victim’s parents may have been unaware their child was covered by insurance.

“The duration for crediting the compensation to the heirs depends on the documents submitted. If the documents are sent promptly, the compensation will be faster,” she said.

Meanwhile, MBI’s corporate social responsibility cum corporate communications head Ahmad Azri Zainal Nor said one week has been given to Insan to contact the victim’s family before further action is taken.

“For now, let the deceased’s family grieve. On behalf of MBI, I extend my condolences and hope they can endure this heavy trial. May her soul rest in peace,” he said.

Insan was introduced last year to protect all Selangor residents as early as 30 days old up to 80 years old, with the state government fully covering the premium costs.

Targeting six million citizens, the scheme provides up to RM10,000 in protection for permanent disability and death due to accidents.

In early August, Insan was improved with the Insan Takaful scheme, which provides up to RM10,000 in protection, while heirs receive RM1,000 in the event of a fatality.

At present, 57 out of 129 Insan compensation claims have been settled for heirs, valued at at RM669,000.
