High-tech facility development to propel recycling rate by 2025

By Zareef Muzammil

SHAH ALAM, Nov 14 — The development of the high-tech Selangor Recycle Surge facility in all local councils will help increase the recycling rate in the state by up to 15 per cent by 2025.

KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) managing director Datuk Ramli Mohd Tahir said this will subsequently ensure the state’s objective under the First Selangor Plan is achieved.

Ramli explained that the RM3 million long term project, which will be implemented in stages, will include a material recovery collection facility (MRCF), community recycling centre, as well as drop-off and drive-thru recycling centres.

“KDEBWM plans to add at least five more recycling facilities. The implementation of this project will be subject to the state government’s allocation and private finance initiatives.

“It will be implemented through collaborations with several strategic partners,” he told Selangorkini, adding that the public will be the biggest winner when the project is completed.

Last Friday, when tabling the 2024 Selangor Budget, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari announced that RM3 million will be allocated to develop the Selangor Recycle Surge facility in all local councils, in line with the state’s effort to promote recycling.

He said the initiative is expected to reduce the amount of wastes being sent to recycling centres, thereby saving the state expenses on waste disposal fees.

Meanwhile, Ramli said the KDEBWM’s recycling initiative started in 2018 through the operation of MRCF along Jalan Korporate Meru, Klang, before it was expanded to Bandar Bukit Puchong two years later.

More recently, the facility was made available in Bukit Changgang, Kuala Langat.

“KDEBWM is also operating the community recycling centre in Cyberjaya from August 2022, besides launching the drop-off recycling centre at the Kampung Baru Hicom PPR and several other locations in Hulu Selangor.”
