Stop posturing; no need to educate Speaker on duties, Azmin told

By Danial Dzulkifly

SHAH ALAM, Nov 15 — Seri Kembangan assemblyman Wong Siew Ki has lambasted Opposition leader Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and his Perikatan Nasional colleagues for allegedly using the Selangor State Legislative Assembly for political posturing and propaganda.

She accused them of disrupting the legislative process by attempting to “educate” state Speaker Lau Weng San on performing his duties, implying their actions were more about gamesmanship than genuine governance.

“This august House is a place where truth should be upheld, not a platform for political actors to disseminate party propaganda. It is crucial that we, as Selangor elected representatives, respect not only our own roles but also those of others in this assembly.

“Let the Menteri Besar carry out his duties, the Speaker to fulfil his responsibilities, as well as the state executive councillors and Opposition leader, to do their respective jobs.

“We should be fostering mutual respect rather than assuming the roles of others, provoking conflicts, or instructing the Speaker on how to conduct his duties.

“If the Opposition leader aspires to take on the role of the Speaker, then the appropriate course of action would be to secure victory in the state election and seek the position from among yourselves,” Wong said when debating the 2024 Selangor Budget today.

Her remarks invited strong responses from Opposition lawmakers, including Taman Medan’s Afif Bahardin and Gombak Setia’s Muhammad Hilman Idham.

They attempted to interject her speech to seek clarification but were not allowed the opportunity.

Wong’s comments were in reference to several disruptions caused by Opposition lawmakers over the past couple of days, including Azmin’s repeated references to house rules concerning the conduct of the assembly.

Azmin had, on several occasions, interjected Lau during the course of proceedings, including demanding an extension of time to debate the 2024 Selangor Budget beyond the 5pm cut-off.
