KPWKM to mobilise officers, counselors to ensure wellbeing of flood evacuees

CHUKAI, Dec 27 — The Women, Family, and Community Development Ministry (KPWKM) has mobilised 5,167 officers and personnel, as well as 157 counsellors and 864 Psychology Support Teams (PST), to be deployed at any time to ensure flood evacuees’ well-being.

It said 8,543 volunteers under the Social Welfare Department (JKM) are also on standby to facilitate the smooth operation of temporary relief centres (PPS).

“In terms of supply of necessities, all eight depots, 137 state and district stores, 60 mini container depots, and 580 JKM frontline bases are ready to handle any flood eventualities.

“860 suppliers of basic necessities and 1,224 suppliers of packed food have also been appointed by JKM to ensure immediate supplies can be delivered if needed,” KPWKM said in a statement today.

It also urged the public, especially in flood-prone areas, to be alert and follow evacuation instructions from authorities to prevent untoward incidents.

So far, 8,481 PPS have been identified nationwide, with the capacity to house 2.15 million evacuees at any one time.

“From the total, 5,063 or 60 per cent of the PPS are schools, while the rest are community halls, mosques, and so on,” it added.

KPWKM Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad visited three PPS in Kemaman to monitor the situation and survey JKM’s management of flood evacuees.

They include Dewan Sivik Air Putih, housing 178 people from 45 families; the Dewan Orang Ramai Kampung Teladas Air Putih, with 170 people from 45 families; and Surau Paya Mempuyu, with 71 people from 18 families.

KPWKM via JKM is also responsible for preparing and maintaining the PPS; providing and distributing food, clothing, and other basic needs; registering evacuees for rehabilitation purposes; and providing guidance, advisory, or counselling services to disaster victims.
