Selangor Sultan attends 17th King’s oath-taking, installation ceremony

SHAH ALAM, Jan 31 — The Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj graciously attended the oath-taking and letter of appointment signing ceremony for His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim as the 17th King of Malaysia at Istana Negara today.

His Royal Highness was also privileged to be the first witness as Sultan Ibrahim signed the Letter of Appointment during the 264th Conference of Rulers’ (special) meeting.

“The 264th meeting was chaired by the Sultan of Terengganu Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, where the Letter of Appointment was also signed by His Royal Highness the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, with His Royal Highness the Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Mukhriz Almarhum Tuanku Munawir as witness.

“With the completion of the ceremony, it signifies the commencement of the five-year reign of Sultan Ibrahim as a milestone of Malaysia’s sovereignty and unity, as stipulated in the Federal Constitution,” said the Selangor Royal Office in a Facebook post.

During the ceremony, Sultan Ibrahim took his oath as the 17th King of Malaysia amid traditional customs, while the Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah was also sworn in as the Deputy King.

The Sultans of Johor and Perak were chosen by the Malay Rulers at the 263rd (Special) Conference of Rulers at Istana Negara in October last year for a five-year term starting today.

Sultan Ibrahim, 65, and Sultan Nazrin Shah, 67, recited and signed the letter of appointment before the Malay Rulers from Terengganu, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, and Kedah.

Johor was represented by the Regent of Johor, Pahang by the Regent of Pahang, Perlis by the Regent of Perlis, Kelantan by the Tengku Mahkota of Kelantan.

Also in attendance were the Governors of Melaka, Penang, Sabah, Sarawak, and other distinguished individuals representing the executive, legislative, and judicial branches.
