MB: Selangor allocates RM50,000 to Permas for university programmes

SHAH ALAM, Feb 24 – The state government has allocated RM50,000 to the Selangor Student Association (Permas) to organise various programmes at higher education institutions, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

The funds will also help cover the expenses for its representatives to engage with students nationwide and help with welfare matters if needed.

“At present, committee members can visit campuses to meet with students to assess their welfare.

“InsyaAllah, if there is an opportunity, I will also visit and meet with all Permas committees throughout Malaysia,” he said during his address at the closing ceremony of the Selangor Mahasiswa Convention 2024 at the Mardhiyyah Hotel and Suites today.

The two-day convention, which began yesterday, convened 200 Selangor students from 16 public higher education institutions nationwide. It provided a platform for students to engage in discussions and offer suggestions or ideas on the state government’s policies.

Amirudin urged the students to actively contribute to Malaysia by fostering critical thinking and proposing sustainable solutions.

He expressed concern over the diminishing emphasis on critical thinking in recent years, attributing it partly to the proliferation of social media, which tends to shorten attention spans.

“This has resulted in complex and challenging problems being condensed into mere one, three, or five-minute narratives, often failing to represent the entire issue or favouring certain perspectives,” he said.

Amirudin also cited the global phenomenon of irresponsible dissemination of information through social media platforms, leading to skewed narratives which neglect long-term implications.

He cautioned students to be vigilant in evaluating the information they consume, as it directly influences their decision-making abilities.
