‘MBDK to consist of only specially qualified councillors within a year’

By Suhaila Shahrul Annuar

SABAK BERNAM, Feb 14 — Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the state government is committed to appointing individuals with specialised qualifications as members of the Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) within its first year.

He noted that the majority of those who are currently appointed as councillors are also skilled individuals in their fields.

“In the first year, we’ll try to appoint those with specialised qualifications,” he said during a site visit to the coasts of Kuala Selangor and Sabak Bernam to address the issue of cockle seed theft, here, yesterday.

“Most of those whom we have already appointed or chosen also possess specialised skills or qualifications that make them deserving of being recognised as professionals in their respective fields.”

Elaborating further, Amirudin said all future MBDK appointments must possess at least a diploma certificate, in line with Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj’s recommendation.

“The vacant positions will be filled immediately. We will try to fulfil His Royal Highness’ wishes to ensure at least 50 per cent of the positions are occupied by professionals,” he said.

Amirudin said this in reference to the call by Sultan Sharafuddin that half of MBDK members should consist of professionals to help enhance the city’s governance and development.

In his royal address at the declaration ceremony of Klang as a royal city on February 5, His Royal Highness had also said the council’s composition should mirror Klang’s diverse communities.

The ceremony saw the swearing-in of Datin Paduka Noraini Roslan, who served as the MPK president, as Klang’s first mayor.

Klang is the fourth city in Selangor after Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam and Subang Jaya. It is also the state’s first royal city, although the change of status officially took effect on November 23 last year.

Previously, Amirudin had said that at least 15 candidates nominated as MBDK members have a diploma or higher qualification.
