Public transportation push: Selangor Mobility Master Plan in the works

SHAH ALAM, Feb 8 — The Selangor government is looking to formulate the Selangor Mobility Master and Action Plans this year as part of its effort to promote the use of public transportation.

In a post on Facebook, state executive councillor for mobility Ng Sze Han said this was among the key decisions made during the 2024 Standing Committee Meeting and Selangor Mobility Retreat in Petaling Jaya, which concluded yesterday.

“All Federal government agencies and state authorities have reached a consensus pertaining to the planning and management of Selangor Mobility,” he said.

According to Ng, among the main agendas for the state government this year include a detailed review of existing Smart Selangor Bus routes, and the setting up of the Selangor Mobility Lab for better sharing and analysis of data among different agencies.

“Other agendas this year are the development of the Selangor Mobility Master Plan and Action Plan, as well as the enhancement of demand-responsive transit services, pedestrian walkways and usage of electric buses in cities.

“Promoting the use of public transport is the core agenda of Selangor Mobility,” he added.

Ng said the government’s main challenge remains resolving the issue of traffic congestion, particularly in urban and populated areas, through the enhancement of the public transportation system.

These planned improvements, he added, are aimed at expediting the transition from using private to public vehicles.

Meanwhile, Ng said half of the Selangor population are currently residing in the proposed Greater Klang Valley region, which includes the cities of Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, Shah Alam and Klang, requiring greater focus on the public transport network.

Previously, when tabling the 2024 Selangor Budget, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari had announced plans to introduce an enactment to formalise the creation of the Greater Klang Valley to better manage urban growth complexities.

He said the state will allocate RM2 million to this end, and that the establishment of the conurbation is crucial to, among other things, streamlining the administrative processes for businesses and residents, rejuvenating mature cities, implementing a digital twin system for government administration, and promoting public transportation.

Amirudin had also vowed to improve the overall public transportation system, including expanding rail lines to the rural regions in the state.
