MB: Selangor to soon submit letter of intent on adoption of solid waste Act

By Yasmin Ramlan

SHAH ALAM, March 15 — Selangor will submit its Letter of Intent (LOI) on the adoption of the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672) to the Local and Housing Government Ministry (KPKT) possibly by today or next Monday (March 18), said Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

In a press conference today, the Menteri Besar said he hopes to see the adoption of the Act to take place by this year should there be a sufficient budget.

“Yesterday, we (the state government) decided to write a letter to KPKT. Possibly today or Monday, we will officially send the LOI to sign it, in accordance with the decision from the State Executive Council meeting on Wednesday,” he told the media after witnessing the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Selangor Technical Skills Development Centre (STDC) and iMotorbike in Glenmarie, here today.

Amirudin stated that there was an ongoing discussion during the state executive councillor retreat in Sabah in January.

“The LOI will be followed by a series of negotiations and discussions as the content of the agreement involves the Federal government and the state government,” he said.

On March 10, Minister Nga Kor Ming said that Selangor had agreed in principle to adopt the Act.

Nga said he was also granted an audience with the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, who consented for Selangor to adopt Act 672

The following day (March 11), Amirudin said that the state was set to adopt Act 672 by the end of this year and had agreed in principle to the 62 contents under the legislation.

Seven states have adopted Act 672 so far, while five more, namely Kelantan, Terengganu, Perak, Selangor and Penang, have yet to sign the agreement.

Act 672 aims to ensure uniformity in law for the proper control and regulation of matters relating to the management of controlled solid waste and public cleansing.
