WHO renews calls for protection of all Gaza hospitals

RAMALLAH, April 18 — World Health Organisation (WHO) director-general Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, on Wednesday, renewed calls to provide protection for all hospitals in the Gaza Strip.

Tedros described the destruction inflicted on hospitals in Gaza as heartbreaking, Palestine News and Info Agency (Wafa) reported.

He said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, that “we conducted, with our partners, an assessment of the situation in Al-Shifa Hospital and the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza”, stressing that the process of recovering bodies from the Al-Shifa Hospital is ongoing.

Tedros pointed out that health workers have cleaned the emergency department of Al-Shifa Hospital and removed burnt beds, and the safety of the remaining building needs a comprehensive engineering evaluation, while noting that the Indonesian Hospital is empty, and reconstruction work is continuing in an attempt to rehabilitate it.

He called for an immediate ceasefire, saying that the main medicine that people in Gaza need is peace.

According to the Ministry of Health, 12 hospitals in the Gaza Strip are partially operating, with six in the north and six others in the south.

The Israeli aggression on Gaza has resulted in 33,843 fatalities and 76,575 injuries since October 2023.
