Sepang is first local authority to destroy aedes with used cooking oil

CYBERJAYA, JAN 25: Sepang Municipal Council (MPS) is the first local authority recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR), following its success in creating aedes mosquito repellent spray ‘Aedes Bio-Based Fuel’ (ABBF) with used cooking oil.
MPS Yang Dipertua Datuk Puasa Md Taib said ABBF was developed with the cooperation from Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) since 2015, and the product is now being trial-used in selected localities such as Taman Dengkil..
“The product will be patented and registered in the near future to widen its consumption,” he said as reported by BERNAMA.
He said MPS plans to use ABBF in areas that record high cases of dengue fever.
Among the advantages of using ABBF are that it has the same effects of a diesel repellent, it reduces toxic effects and does not sting the eyes or produce an uncomfortable smell.
ABBF also reduces health risks of workers who carry out fogging activities and those who are exposed to the fog, besides being environmental-friendly.
In a ceremony on January 25, Puasa received the MBOR certificate from MBOR Assistant Manager Ayman Izzaz.
Commenting further, Puasa said the constraints faced by MPS now is the limited supply of used cooking oil currently, which is at around 5,000 kilogrammes a month.
Meanwhile, FRIM Biomass Technology Programme Leader Wan Asma Ibrahim said the used cooking oil bought by MPS is being processed at the FRIM bioenergy workshop in Kepong.
She said that on average, one tonne of used cooking oil produces at least 80% of ABBF.
“At the moment, MPS is buying the used cooking oil from food businesses in shopping malls around Sepang via an agreement,” said Wan Asma.
