Port Klang to record 13.8 mln TEUs container handling by year-end

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 3 — Port Klang is expected to record 13.8 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) container handling by year-end, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong said.

He said that as of November 30, 2021, container handling at the port stood at 12.69 million TEUs.

“I am confident that with this performance, we will definitely achieve the best record for Port Klang in about a month, exceeding the pre-Covid-19 level of 13.6 million TEUs,” he told reporters after the Section C (Northern Alignment) document handover ceremony between Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) and China Communications Construction Company Ltd (CCCC) here yesterday.

Therefore, he said Port Klang needed to be further expanded to be able to compete with ports in the region such as Singapore, which is expanding its port to accommodate a capacity of 65 million TEUs per year.

“Every year, Port Klang needs to add 1.5 million TEUs to accommodate the increase in container capacity but it is still not enough,” he said.

Hence, he said the Transport Ministry is looking to make Carey Island a maritime hub by placing a third port there.

“We already have a master plan and we share it with the Selangor state government,” he added.
