MB wishes Indian community Happy Ponggal Day, be blessed with abundance

SHAH ALAM, Jan 15 — The Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari wishes the entire Tamil community of Selangor who is celebrating the festival, a Happy Ponggal Day, today.

He said Ponggal is an important tradition that brings an abundance of sustenance in life and household.

“Have a great Ponggal celebration. Most Tamil families and communities throughout Selangor will be celebrating the Ponggal harvest festival today, marking the beginning of the Thai (10th) month in the Tamil calendar.

“May everyone be blessed with great spirit when celebrating Ponggal,” he said.

This festival is celebrated during the harvest season by the Indian community in Tamil Nadu as a sign of gratitude to nature, which is celebrated on the first day of the Thai month according to the Tamil calendar.

Ponggal is the name of the sweet rice that is boiled with milk using an earthen pot. In Malaysia, this festival is considered a multicultural celebration.
