Use ICT to monitor religious activities at mosques — Selangor Sultan

KLANG, March 2 — The Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj has ordered nazirs (overseers) in the state to set aside part of their mosque’s funds for the provision of equipment to record and monitor all ceramah (religious lectures) given at their respective mosques.

His Royal Highness said the mosque and its qariah members will also benefit from having the information and communications technology (ICT) equipment as each ceramah can be broadcast live on many platforms, shared and referred to whenever needed.

As such, mosques can function better as information centres that can provide data to all religious agencies, like the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais), State Islamic Religious Department (Jais), Selangor Zakat Board (LZS), and the Social Welfare Department (JKM).

“Through the use of technology, Mais can monitor and review the financial reports of all mosques and surau online.

“This can prevent irregularities in the financial management of mosques and surau in the state,” said Sultan Sharafuddin in a speech before presenting letters of credentials and appointments to 1,256 imams and nazirs in a ceremony held at Istana Alam Shah, earlier today.

Also in attendance was the Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah.

His Royal Highness also advised all nazirs and imams to administer their respective mosques in an efficient, transparent, and professional manner.

“Any decision made by the nazir and the committee must be in accordance with the law and regulations, as well as my decrees. Actions will be taken against those who fail to comply with all the rules,” said Sultan Sharafuddin.

In the meantime, His Royal Highness reiterated that any kuliah, ceramahs, and tazkirah (religious sermons) at mosques can only be delivered by those who have credentials issued by the Mais Credentials Committee.

Foreign speakers are only allowed to deliver their religious talks and sermons at the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque (State Mosque) in Shah Alam, the Tengku Ampuan Jemaah Mosque in Bukit Jelutong, the Sultan Sulaiman Royal Mosque in Klang, and the Raja Haji Fi Sabilillah Mosque in Cyberjaya.
