EC fails to cooperate in new voter registration

BY: AFIX REDZUAN
PETALING JAYA, SEP 29: The Selangor DAP criticised the Election Commission (EC) for failing to fully cooperate in registering more new voters for the coming General Election (GE).
Selangor DAP Vice President Hannah Yeah said that she had planned to open registration counters for new voters at 10 locations in September and October. However, the EC had cancelled their attendance at four locations.
It was more disappointing when the EC provided less than 1,000 registration and change-of-address forms, and hence, these counters had to be closed earlier than planned.

“We are facing problems registering new voters as EC fails to provide sufficient number of forms.
“As of today, we have registered 1,484 new voters; while 741 changed their constituencies in Selangor,” she said during a media conference in the Selangor DAP Headquarters on September 29.
According to her, EC’s cancellations at the four locations with the excuses of not having enough staff and being busy with other matters, were most disappointing.
The four locations are Paragon Point, Klang Parade, Tesco Bukit Beruntung and Metro Kajang Plaza shopping centres.

“To youths and those who want to register, don’t give up. Continue to try to register,” she said.
Meanwhile, Selangor DAP Chairman Tony Pua said the EC is seen as trying to sabotage the voter registration process.
He said, the action reflects EC’s inefficiencies and that they let go of their duty of ensuring eligible voters carry out their voter responsibilities.
“These are the reasons why youths or new voters are no longer loyal to Umno and Barisan Nasional. In fact, this is proven in the last election where many had voted for the opposition,” he said.
