Semenyih River water pollution investigation continues

BY: ELIZABETH WONG
KUALA LUMPUR, SEP 26: The odour pollution in the Semenyih River that had resulted in the Semenyih water treatment plant having to temporarily cease its operations 3 times in 48 hours, has resumed operations since 2:30 pm on 24 September 2016.
semenyih-river-investigationThere has been no odour pollution detected in the last 50 hours since the water treatment plant resumed its operations on Saturday afternoon of the 24th September. As at 5:00 pm today, water supply has been restored in most of the affected areas:
Date 26-Sep-16
Status 5:00 PM
Areas/Restoration %
Petaling 78%
Hulu Langat 83%
Sepang 99.6%
Kuala Langat 99%
Relief water supply will continue to be sent by tankers to the balance affected areas until full restoration by 28 September 2016.
Air Selangor together with the Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) and Department of Environment (DOE) have been conducting their investigations to identify the source of pollution 24 hours a day since 22 September 2016. The team will continue with the investigation until the source is identified and brought to justice.
Under Section 25 of the Environment Quality Act 1974, the penalty if found guilty in a court of law is RM100 thousand fine and/or 5 years imprisonment. In addition, if it is a business or a premise which was found to be the source, the local council will revoke all licenses and stop all operations. No appeals will be considered as this incident had caused hardship to consumers in Selangor.
The media had asked for our comments on the Minister for Local Government and Housing YB Noh Omar’s accusations today during his media stunt this morning in Semenyih. The State Government does not waste time on such cheap politicking by miscreants and is focused on two matters – full restoration of water to affected areas and identification and prosecution of the culprits involved. Air Selangor, LUAS and DOE have been on top of this issue from the minute it unfolded and got the Semenyih Treatment Plant operating in full capacity since Saturday afternoon. All credit goes to these agencies.
