Demonstrations: Najib’s greatest achievement

BY: NAZLI IBRAHIM
SHAH ALAM, NOV 24: The series of huge demonstrations held lately is seen as Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s biggest achievement as Prime Minister so far.
Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the demonstrations in Najib’s era are clearly due to dissatisfaction of his corrupt administration.
“Najib’s biggest success as Prime Minister is the biggest demonstration participated by almost a hundred thousand people, even though they were intimidated and threatened,” he said.
He said that Najib’s administration clearly disregards democracy and the constitution, especially with the arrests of several individuals related to the peaceful rally, BERSIH 5.
However, he said that the action did not discourage supporters from attending the rally, which he has also joined.

Since Najib took the helm as Prime Minister, the Coalition for Fair and Clean Election (BERSIH 2.0) has held four peaceful rallies with huge turnouts at each event, estimated at around 300,000 people.
The biggest turnout was during BERSIH 4 held in August 2015, with more than 500,000 estimated participants when it was held for 36 hours continuously.
Besides demonstrations held by BERSIH 2.0, several other organisations had also held rallies to protest the Goods & Services Tax (GST), in addition to youth and student rallies expressing their dissatisfaction at Najib’s administration.
