Selangor wants citizens to bring their own bags

BY: AFIX REDZUAN
SELAYANG, JAN 24: The State Government does not intend to use the money paid by consumers for each plastic bag at retailers to prepare more alternative bags but wants to educate the public to bring their own bags.
Tourism, Environment, Green Technology and Consumer Affairs Exco Elizabeth Wong said that too many plastic bags are being used in daily life and the State Government does not want the total usage to increase in order to preserve the natural environment.
“The main objective of reducing the use of plastic bags is not to replace plastic bags but to educate the public to use their own bags.
“If we suggest replacing the plastic bags with paper bags or such alternatives it will not achieve the objective,” she said.
She said that the State Government is urging the public to bring their own bags to reduce the usage of plastic bags that have become rampant.
She added that based on the feedback received, there is a positive reaction relating to the implementation of the plastic bag free campaign that began on January 1, 2017.
