Another death in custody, Selangor Keadilan Youth press for IPCMC to be formed

BY: AFZAINIZAM RAHMAN
The Selangor KEADILAN Youth (AMK) is shock with another death of detainee, Thanaseelan A/L Muniandy in the cell in Bukit Sentosa Police Station, Hulu Selangor when he was discovered unconscious last February 25 (Saturday) at 1.50 in the morning.
This is the second death in police cell, after the case involving S.Balamurugan who died last February 8 in the Klang District Police Headquarters where a second autopsy report showed death due to injury by blunt object.
In fact, statistics given by Home Ministry in the last Parliamentary session showed that death in custody in Malaysia is very high with 269 cases over the last 16 years since year 2000.
Selangor AMK urges the government to establish the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) to investigate and address deaths in police custody, as proposed by many parties previously.
It is the Royal Malaysia Police’s (PDRM) responsibility to ensure detainees are monitored, protected and adequately cared for during detention before being brought to justice.
Selangor AMK also urges PDRM to accept the recommendations by the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) to improve the SOP on detainees in cells and prisons.
Citizens are observing the government and PDRM’s actions in addressing this case and an immediate action is required for PDRM to continue to be respected and looked up to by Malaysians.
