Selangor leads in developing halal industry portfolio

By Norrasyidah Arshad

SHAH ALAM, Dec 15 — Selangor emerged as the first state to develop a special field task related to halal aspects to empower the industry towards global standards.

State executive councillor for halal industry Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni said the portfolio, which was introduced in October, connects the state’s Syariah institution as the policyholder to attract investors.

“Prior to this, the halal industry was under the purview of the investment executive councillor but we wanted to combine the Selangor Islamic Council (Mais) and the Selangor Islamic Department as the policyholder.

“We were invited to international conferences and recently to Canada to share about our halal industry experience,” said Mohd Zawawi during Media Selangor’s Bual Bicara talk show last night.

Zawawi, who also holds the consumer affairs portfolio, also aimed to increase awareness campaigns regarding online fraud issues that cause financial losses.

On October 7, Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari announced five new field tasks, namely culture of innovation and Smart Selangor, disaster management, workers’ empowerment, halal industry and integration.
