TOKYO, July 24 — National men’s artistic gymnast Jeremiah Loo Phay Xing’s chances of advancing to the men’s all-around finals in the Tokyo Olympics look bleak after he could only finish 19th out of 22 gymnasts in the subdivision one qualifying round on Saturday.
The 23-year-old Penangite collected a total of 67.498 points after taking part in all six apparatus on the opening day of the artistic gymnastics event at the Ariake Gymnastics Centre here.
Despite getting off to a good start by scoring 13.100 points in the floor exercise, Jeremiah’s performance level deteriorated in the next five disciplines.
He amassed 12.266 points in the pommel horse and 7.700 points in the rings, his lowest score on all the apparatus, followed by 12.466 points in the vault, 10.200 on the parallel bars before ending the day with 11.766 points on the horizontal bar.
Nagornyy Nikita from the Russian Federation emerged victorious in the subdivision one qualifying round with 87.897 points while China’s Xiao Ruoteng (87.732 points) and Sun Wei (87.298 points) came in second and third respectively.
Only the top 24 ranked gymnasts, with a maximum of two representatives per country, will qualify for the all-around finals, which is slated to be next Wednesday (July 28).
The qualifying rounds for subdivision two and subdivision three will be held later on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s Farah Ann Abdul Hadi is set to make her Olympic debut on Sunday (July 25) when she competes in the women’s all-around qualifying round.
