Sukma: Selangor to review gold medal target

By Amin Ridzuan Ishak

SHAH ALAM, Oct 5 — Selangor will review its initial 45 gold medal target in Sukan Malaysia (Sukma) 2020 which is expected to be held next year after being postponed twice due to Covid-19.

Selangor National Sports Council (MSN Selangor) executive director Mohamad Nizam Marjugi said this is following the latest development of the athletes, in which several may choose to withdraw from the competition to pursue further studies.

He added the assessment will be based on the discussion with each team that has already resumed their training after the Federal government eased restrictions on sporting activities.

“Our athletes have been training under the sports bubble programme before flexibility was given under Phase Three of the National Recovery Plan.

“We want to make sure our athletes are able to give their best performance, despite a clear date for Sukma in Johor yet,” Nizam said when contacted by SelangorKini.

Initially, Sukma Johor 2020 was set to take place from July 11 to 19 last year, before being postponed to March 6 to 14 this year. However the event was postponed again, due to the high number of Covid-19 cases.

Previously Selangor had aimed to achieve 45 gold medals, 40 silver medals and 40 bronze medals during Sukma.
