GOMBAK, Dec 31 — The cleanup process in several areas affected by floods is expected to reach 90 per cent by next week, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

Amirudin said so far, the process has reached 40 per cent and the state government has begun to aggressively intensify the operations.

“In Taman Sri Muda, 90 RoRo lorries (Roll On Roll Off) and backhoes have been deployed to clear the waste. The assets deployed is three times higher compared to five days ago when there were only 35 lorries.

“Also, the cleanup efforts in Kampung Bukit Lanchong, Kampung Tengah and Kampung Sri Aman is improving with only 25 per cent (of waste) remaining,” he said after handing over Selangor Bangkit aid at the Balai Penghulu Mukim Batu, Gombak, yesterday.

Amirudin added that the cleanup process is now focussed on Bukit Changgang and Labohan Dagang because floodwaters in areas are among the last to recede.

“Since yesterday, the state government has also increased the amount of bulk garbage collected from flood victims and domestic clients.

“In total, we have collected up 3,000 metric tonnes of post-flood waste and 7,000 tonnes of daily domestic rubbish. Since Wednesday (December 29) we have increased the collection limit to 10,000 metric tonnes per day,” he said.

The extraordinary rain from December 17 to 19 was double the previous highest rainfall average of 180mm, resulting in many places in Selangor becoming submerged in water.
