Selangor allocates 20,000 chickens for affordable sale programme next month

SHAH ALAM, May 28 — The number of chickens to be sold in June during Selangor’s affordable sale programme has been increased from 10,000 to 20,000 a day, says state executive councillor for agriculture Izham Hashim.

He said the single fold increase compared to the initial plan was due to the high demand in Selangor.

“The demand for chicken is 15 million per month but its production in the state is only half of that at 7.5 million.

“In fact, not all the chicken produced is sold in Selangor, so it is not enough to cater for the local demand. We need to bring in more to cover the shortage,” he told Selangorkini.

He said this after launching the Jelajah Agro Selangor roadshow held at Central i-City here, last night.

Izham said the additional 10,000 chickens would be imported from Thailand.

“We will reduce the price by RM1. If the ceiling price per kilogramme (kg) is RM8.90, and a whole chicken with a weight of 1.8 kilograms (kg) fetches around RM16, we will sell it at RM15,” he said.

On May 24, Izham said the state government would continue the affordable chicken sale programme that was implemented from December last year until Syawal as a short-term solution to the supply shortage.

The programme that will be held from June 1 until the Aidiladha festival offers essential items at lower than market prices to help consumers deal with the rising prices of goods.
