PKR preps for floods with emergency supplies, GE

SHAH ALAM, Oct 17 — PKR’s Hulu Selangor branch is prepping for the flood season, as political parties clamour to activate their campaign machinery

MalaysiaKini reported division chief Dr Sathia Prakash Nadarajan conducting a field visit yesterday to inspect some of the emergency supplies purchased in preparation for the floods in Antara Gapi.

These included an inflatable kayak, as well as LED lights, candles, generators, batteries and medication, on top of food and clothing to support anticipated flood relief efforts.

“We see the government is busy preparing for the 15th general election but what about preparing areas which will be affected by floods?

“For us, launching our flood preparation squad is equally important. Parliament may have been dissolved but we cannot forget about the impending floods.

“This is commonplace in November and December, so we have to prioritise the people,” he said.

Dr Sathia added his team is ready to assist some Hulu Selangor 250,000 residents in the event of flooding in the area which, at 1,700 square kilometres, is the size of Malacca.

He said the team has already identified potential hotspots, particularly those near rivers.

“At the same time, we are focusing on areas which have a high potential of flooding but have never experienced it before,” Dr Sathia said.

The Northeast Monsoon season usually brings heavy rain to Selangor between November and March, with the state expected to see between 210mm and 370mm in average rainfall.

Up to 796 temporary evacuation centres which can accommodate as many as 151,000 flood victims have been put on standby and ready for activation, alongside 12 forward bases to store emergency supplies.

On October 10, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced Parliament’s dissolution, paving the way for GE15.
