PETALING JAYA, Nov 23 — After a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, sports tourism in Selangor is back in full force with the hosting of several prestigious tournaments, says Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

The Menteri Besar said some of the events that are held during the transition phase to endemic this year include the Asia Badminton Championship, Le Tour De Langkawi and the Selangor Masters 2022, which opens today.

“This is one of the tourist attractions and a part of the economic revival, although the main driver is sports,” he said at a press conference at the Seri Selangor Golf Club, here yesterday.

Amirudin also said that several golf clubs in the state are frequently visited by either professional, amateurs or social golfers.

“One of the attractions is the Selangor Seri Golf Club, as shown by how it is frequently utilised, particularly on weekends and public holidays,” he said.

The 2022 Selangor Budget has outlined initiatives amounting to RM114.6 million from 2021 to 2025 to help the tourism industry, including recovery grants and post-pandemic promotions.

On September 11, Amirudin said that the 2023 state budget placed additional emphasis on the tourism industry to advance the post-pandemic market.
