State sports development programmes to be augmented, finding grassroots talents — Exco

KAJANG, Dec 17 — The state government will continue the existing sports development programme next year to unearth potential new talent on the grassroots level, said state executive councillor for sports Mohd Khairuddin Othman.

Citing the Kejohanan Piala Budak Kampung event as an example, he said sporting activities will be carried out with the allocations announced in the 2023 Selangor Budget.

“Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari has allocated a relatively decent amount to implement sports development programmes, and I have found the approved budget most suitable.

“We will continue what we have (sports development programmes). I believe if we move like this, InsyaAllah the results will be evident within the next three to four years,” he said when met at Arena Owl Trafford in Bangi earlier today.

Meanwhile, Mohd Khairuddin acknowledged the lack of a platform is one of several factors which have made it difficult for new talents to be promoted to higher levels.

“An example is when a person plays for Liga Shah Alam, organised by a private party, but this league is not connected to a higher party. So the individual just plays for that league only.

“So our approach is to help these individuals go further through the Selangor Sports Council (MSNS), in line with the aim to produce many backers for various sports events,” he said.

During the tabling of the budget on November 25, Amirudin said MSNS’ sports development programme would receive a RM7 million allocation.

The project to repair and build sporting infrastructure remains ongoing, with RM2.24 million in expenditure to uphold sports development and sports activities.
