RM20 mln allocated for river conservation, flood mitigation in Selangor — Minister

SHAH ALAM, Feb 23 — The Federal government allocated RM20 million to realise river conservation projects in Selangor throughout 2022, said Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

The allocation, made under the 12th Malaysia Plan, is aimed at reducing the risk of flooding in the state.

He said the Selangor Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) has spent close to RM1.4 million in implementing five short-term mitigation projects, in the state constituencies of Meru, Sementa, and Selat Klang.

“JPS is also planning to implement flood mitigation projects in Sungai Kapar Kecil and Sungai Kapar Besar, which will be subject to approval from the central agency.

“The flood mitigation project in Kapar will include the construction of a water catchment pond. The project will hopefully be able to deal with the flood problem on the whole,” Nik Nazmi said during the wrap-up of the debate on the Royal Decree at Parliament, earlier today.

The Setiawangsa MP said the state government has also channelled up to RM67.5 million to JPS, for the implementation of four flood mitigation projects.

JPS has also implemented an erosion control project, and strengthened the embankment of Sungai Kajang in Tanjong Karang, as a step to resolve the problem of seawater overflow.

“This project involves the construction and raising of a beach barrier two kilometres long. Currently, its design is being finalised and is expected to commence in July for a period of 18 months,” he said.
