Racial unity the most valuable asset, reject those who sow discord — Exco

SHAH ALAM, May 27 — The unity enjoyed by Selangor’s multiracial community is the most valuable asset and foundation for the state’s progress.

State executive councillor for unity Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud this value must always be preserved, to prevent it from being disturbed by seeking to fan the flames of racism.

“Selangor is a state with many races. All ethnic groups are here and it is akin to a ‘small Malaysia’.

“This is why we must safeguard our existing unity. We reject those who want to stoke racial issues as this unity is our strength, not our weakness,” she said.

Dr Siti Mariah was speaking at the state-level 2023 Unity Week celebration, held at Taman Tasik Shah Alam earlier today.

Up to 5,000 visitors attended the event, showing up as early as 7am to participate in various activities, including the unity run, cultural performances, and unity picnics, among others

Themed Perpaduan dalam Kepelbagaian, it will continue at Taman Tasik Cempaka in Bandar Baru Bangi tomorrow, with various interesting activities.

The Unity Week celebration is one of the initiatives under the Civil Malaysia Unity Campaign, which will be celebrated throughout the country in the last week of May every year.

Running from May 20 to May 28, Unity Week 2023 will also be held in 15 other locations nationwide, including Dataran Bertam in Penang, Dewan Masyarakat Papar in Sabah, and Dataran Tasik Kluang in Johor.
