By Suhaila Shahrul Annuar

SHAH ALAM, July 2 — Selangor’s success in achieving the highest growth nationwide and being the largest contributor to Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2022 is proof of its resilience in strengthening the state’s economy.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the state’s contribution of 25.5 per cent to the national GDP, with consistent growth since 2008, indicates that Selangor remains a centre of attraction and economic activity in both Malaysia and Southeast Asia.

He highlighted several introduced steps and policies which have successfully created economic vibrancy while maintaining existing economic activities.

“The implementation of various policies that facilitate business permits and investments, comprehensive centralised approvals which consider business needs, facilities for incoming investors, as well as the provision of skilled energy resources and meeting workforce requirements, all of which have contributed to this development.

“In addition, cooperation with foreign companies including Siemens, FESTO Pte. Ltd and Apple have led them to build their centres of excellence here, which can train a qualified and capable workforce,” Amirudin said.

He was speaking during a special interview session on Selamat Pagi Malaysia, which was broadcast live from Pantai Batu Laut in Tanjung Sepat, earlier today.

The Menteri Besar said the First Selangor Plan (RS-1), which serves as the state’s development framework for the next five years, is balanced and inclusive, covering all districts and their people.

“The spirit and intent behind RS-1’s formulation is to ensure local values are not disrupted, but rather enhanced and preserved. The economic plan is tailored to the unique characteristics of each area. For example, the Sabak Bernam Development Area (Sabda) initiative consists primarily of tourism and agricultural projects, with some housing and fishing landing sites.

“In the southern areas of Selangor, besides developing Pulau Carey as a logistics hub, we will also focus on several tourism projects. This is to ensure all districts experience significant progress and development, leading to high income and quality life, in line with RS-1’s goal of making Selangor a livable, prosperous, and smart state,” he said.

Selangor’s contribution to the GDP increased to 25.5 per cent in 2022, surpassing the previous year’s figure of 24.8 per cent.

Its economic growth also reached 11.9 per cent, exceeding the national growth rate of 8.7 per cent recorded last year.
