Unisel drone centre attracts top companies for flight testing, training

KUALA SELANGOR, July 17 — The Universiti Selangor (Unisel) Drone Excellence Centre (CoE) in Bestari Jaya has over the past two years attracted several well-renowned companies for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) testing and training.

Its president and Vice-Chancellor Prof Dato’ Dr Mohammad Redzuan Othman said the centre was established in collaboration with Selangor Aviation Technology and Innovation Sdn Bhd (Selati) to provide development and research facilities, as well as its strategic location for drone flights.

“I believe the CoE has reached a point where it could develop further. The (testing) process is ongoing as we receive visits from various consultants from time to time.

“Even teams from Korea and the United States have also noted that the area is suitable for drones due to its low altitude and flat terrain,” he said, here yesterday.

Among the companies that utilise the centre include SkyFtures, which has conducted flight testing for two months, Alaf Technology (nine months) Solution Consulting Services (six months).

Redzuan also noted that the centre will be officially launched in the near future, and collaborations with other companies, including faculties, are still under discussion.

On November 25, 2021, Unisel signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Selati to develop the CoE, taking into account the institution’s facilities and strategic environment to develop the drone industry.

Previously, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari stated that the CoE was established to support the drone industry ecosystem in the country.

The centre, which includes drone testing, training, development, maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO), as well as competitions, was developed by Selati.
