COP28: King, Queen to undertake special UAE visit

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 29 — Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah will undertake a Special Visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) starting today to December 4.

In a statement, the Foreign Affairs Ministry (Wisma Putra) said the visit is in conjunction with the 28th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) that will take place from November 30 to December 12 in Dubai.

Their Majesties will be accompanied by the Regent of Pahang Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

The royal entourage also comprises Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz; Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, and senior government officials.

During the visit, Al-Sultan Abdullah is scheduled to attend the World Climate Action Summit and High-Level Segment for Heads of State and Government.

His Majesty has also consented to launch the Malaysian Pavilion and grace a ceremony of exchange of documents involving Malaysian companies and their counterparts on the sidelines of COP28.

The King has also consented to confer the country’s highest honorary awards to UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and members of the ruling family of Abu Dhabi.

Al-Sultan Abdullah and Sheikh Mohamed will also grace a ceremony of exchange of documents relating to US$8 billion (RM37.2 billion) investment by UAE’s Masdar in renewable energy in Malaysia.

This follows the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) and Masdar, which Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim witnessed during his visit to UAE from October 5 to October 6.

UAE is Malaysia’s second-largest trading partner, export destination and import source in West Asia. Malaysia’s total trade with the UAE was recorded at RM38.73 billion (US$8.79 billion) in 2022, an increase of 73.5 per cent from RM22.23 billion (US$5.39 billion) recorded in the preceding year.
