Egypt: COP28 ‘new era’ for global cooperation on climate change

DUBAI, Dec 6 — Egypt commended the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) as a “new era” for global cooperation in addressing climate change.

Its Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mohamed Abou El-Enein, praised the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for hosting the event exceptionally well and expressed pride in the strong bilateral relations between Egypt and the UAE.

“COP28 has marked a new era in global cooperation on climate change. The discussions and pledges made at the conference have demonstrated a renewed commitment to taking effective action to combat climate change.

“The UAE’s hosting of the event has been remarkable, and I am confident that its achievements and milestones will have a lasting impact,” he said in a statement to Emirates News Agency (WAM).

He emphasised that the once-pledged commitment of US$100 billion annually towards climate change mitigation projects is no longer adequate, with the minimum requirement for this battle now demanding a trillion dollars.

Abou El-Enein discussed sustainable agriculture and transportation as crucial aspects and lifelines for the entire world.

Highlighting achievements from COP27, hosted by Egypt in Sharm El-Sheikh last year, he expected new effective initiatives for green sustainability and energy transition to be launched during the coming days of COP28.

Abou El-Enein called on developed countries, most responsible for climate change, to assume their responsibilities in finding climate solutions and providing the necessary support and funding to maintain the goal of limiting the planet’s temperature rise to 1.5 degrees by 2050.

He considered the global trend towards more investments in renewable energy a safe and effective path to support global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and preserve the planet.

Additionally, he noted that Egypt received inquiries from more than 25 international companies interested in investing in green hydrogen after announcing the enactment of the necessary legislation in this field.
