Selangor drives eco-sustainability, per RS-1 — Exco

SUBANG JAYA, Jan 13 — The state government is ramping up its efforts in environmental conservation, particularly through tree planting programmes which align with the First Selangor Plan (RS-1).

State executive councillor for investment, trade and mobility Ng Sze Han said tree planting programmes organised by various parties could encourage environmental greenery, especially in urban areas, thereby reducing carbon emissions.

“Today, the tree planting programme organised by the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) in collaboration with the Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP), involving seven housing developers, is a very commendable effort.

“Programmes like this should be continued in other areas and not limited to Kinrara alone,” he said as its state assemblyman.

Ng was speaking at the Pledge and Plant A Tree (Papat) programme in BK 3/1 Bandar Kinrara today, here.

Thirty-five trees of various species were planted in the surrounding area, including golden chains, kiara payung, white cempaka, bongor, and black rosewood.

Meanwhile, MBSJ’s urban planning deputy director Hazman Mohd Mahayudin said the council is targeting to plant 350,000 trees this year, focusing on species with high absorption and durability.

“In 2022, we planted approximately 227,863 trees, which increased last year to 320,000. Therefore, this year, we aim to grow more trees, for 350,000.

“We focus on areas with fewer trees, like today in the field. After this, it will continue in Puchong Jaya, Seri Kembangan, and Putra Permai,” he said.

On her part, MIP president Datin Noraida Saludin said the tree planting programme had been an annual event since 2008 under corporate social responsibility.

“We have co-organised the programme with MBSJ since last year and are always committed to collaborating with all local authorities and the state government.

“MIP hopes residents will cooperate to care for and maintain every tree planted instead of solely relying on the local authorities to do so,” she said.
