SHAH ALAM, March 20 — The state government is set to introduce a climate change policy aimed at addressing contemporary environmental challenges as well as preparation for future natural disasters.
State executive councillor for environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the policy is progressive in nature, adding that Selangor remains the only state currently planning its implementation.
“Presently, there is no climate change policy yet, and Selangor is set to become the first state to establish one.
“We are also focused on enhancing (disaster) mitigation and green technology,” she said when contacted today.
In November, Jamaliah announced that the Selangor Climate Change Action Council will soon be upgraded into a Centre for Climate Change Adaptation as the state looks to pay more serious attention to the existential threat.
She said the centre, which will cost RM800,000, will draw up strategic measures to address the climate change issue.
In 2022, the state government established the Green Technology Action Plan to address climate change issues and reduce carbon emissions.
The administration also implemented green townships by adopting the Low Carbon Cities Framework as the basis of its policy planning at all levels of local authorities.
This comes in the wake of the major flood that hit Selangor in December 2021 as a result of high tides and exceptionally heavy rainfall averaging 380mm, equivalent to the monthly average rainfall.
