Umno will support Unity Govt’s chosen candidate in KKB by-election

KUALA KUBU BAHARU, April 21 — Umno will support the chosen Unity Government candidate for the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election which will be announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, said its president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The support stems from the party’s principles of honouring the decision among Unity Government component parties regarding seats won by respective parties.

He hopes that should there be any issues or contrary statements made by component party leaders regarding the matter, it would merely be a temporary stand by their parties.

“I think we need to be in a situation of political harmony as it will make it easier for the Prime Minister, as the Unity Government chairman, to find common ground and if there are any differences, in my opinion, they can be resolved in the best manner,” Zahid said.

He was responding to press queries on MCA and MIC’s announcement that they would not campaign for the by-election if the candidate was not from Barisan Nasional (BN).

“The Prime Minister will also meet with them, and I understand the situation faced by MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong when the statement was issued,” Zahid said.

In other developments, he said former Selangor Umno treasurer Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, who resigned earlier this month, will be assigned a new responsibility of arranging strategies and implementing political activities outside the Umno and BN framework.
