SHAH ALAM, FEB 10: Amnesty International urges the immediate and unconditional release of KEADILAN Leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in conjunction with the second anniversary of his incarceration.
Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for Southeast Asia and the Pacific, Josef Benedict said, continuing political persecution of Anwar is a symbolic of Malaysia’s crackdown on human rights.
He said the five-year jail sentence on former opposition leader also makes it impossible to contest in the next general election which is expected soon.
“Anwar was unjustly spent two years in prison on fabricated accusations aimed at closing the mouth and end his political career.
“Anwar’s conviction was a blow to human rights when the government increases attacks on civil society,” he said in a statement.
On February 10, 2015, Anwar failed to challenge the decision of the Court of Appeal to reverse the decision to release him from the Defamation II case and was sentenced to five years in prison.
Anwar was initially released on January 9, 2012 after the High Court found reasonable doubt on the prosecution’s case.
