Ops Air Selangor thwarts two pollution attempts

SHAH ALAM, April 23 — The swift action by the Ops Sumber Air has foiled two pollution attempts at the Sungai Langat river basin, says Hee Loy Sian.

The Selangor Environment, Green Technology, Science, Technology and Innovation and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman said both incidents took place on April 19 at Sungai Pajam and the Hi-Tech 6 Industrial area.

“Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) had identified an increase in ammonia level and cloudy water in Sungai Pajam believed to have come from a nearby fish breeding pond.

“Further checks found that the breeding pond was located in Negeri Sembilan. The Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) contacted the Negeri Sembilan Water Regulatory Body (BKSA N9) and immediate mitigation action was taken,” he said in a statement today.

On the same day, an operation team had also spotted green water at Hi-Tech 6 Industrial Area before passing through Sungai Semenyih.

“Investigation found that a printing plant located at Jalan Sungai Lalang had failed to adhere to the Environmental Quality (Scheduled Waste) Regulations 2005,” he said.

Hee said the Department of Environment (DOE) had forced the printing plant to cease operation and several machines such as compressors and printing machines were seized.

“Samples were sent to the Chemistry Department for analysis,” he said.

The agencies involved in efforts to prevent the river pollution include the police, DOE, Air Selangor, Indah Water Konsortium, Selangor Disaster Management Unit, National Water Services Commission (SPAN), District and Land Office, local authorities and Luas.

The Ops Sumber Air had begun on April 17 and would continue on until May 31.

The surveillance is carried out along Sungai Selangor and Sungai Langat, including Sungai Semenyih.
